Why Choose Scouting of America

Who we are and what we do.

Scouting mission

The mission of the Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The Scout Oath is:

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

The Scout Law is:

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

The Scouting America aims to achieve this mission by providing a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. The program includes Cub Scouts (for boys in grades K-5), Scouts (for boys and girls in grades 6-12), and Venturers (for young men and women in grades 9-12).

About us

Troop 34 of Traverse City, Michigan, is a proud and active unit of Scouts BSA, chartered by Mission Hill Church since February 1, 1965. For over 60 years, we've been dedicated to fostering the growth of youth through adventure, leadership development, and community service. Our scouts participate in a wide array of activities, including summer camps, the annual Klondike Derby, various campouts throughout the year, and special winter trips to places like Long Lake. We emphasize building moral and ethical decision-making skills while encouraging outdoor exploration and teamwork. From planting trees on the Old Mission Peninsula to selling mulch for fundraisers and completing Eagle Scout projects like constructing trailhead informational stations at local nature preserves, our troop is deeply involved in giving back to the Traverse City community.

Troop 34 continues to thrive, where scouts learn valuable life skills in a supportive environment. Our commitment to scouting principles helps shape responsible citizens ready to tackle future challenges.

If you are in the Traverse City area and are interested in joining Troop 34, or if you are an adult who is interested in volunteering with the troop, please contact the Scoutmaster for more information. Troop 34 is always looking for new members and leaders to join the ranks and continue its tradition of excellence.

Why do scouting?

Boy Scouting is a youth program that aims to teach young boys valuable life skills, promote character development, and encourage physical and mental fitness. It is designed to help boys develop into responsible, well-rounded individuals who are capable of making positive contributions to their communities.

Through participation in Boy Scouting, boys have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, including outdoor skills such as camping, hiking, and wilderness survival, as well as leadership skills, teamwork, and citizenship. They also have the chance to participate in a variety of activities and adventures, such as camping trips, community service projects, and recreational activities, which help to promote physical fitness and mental well-being.

Additionally, Boy Scouting provides boys with a sense of belonging and camaraderie, as they are part of a larger group of boys working towards common goals. It also helps boys to develop friendships and build relationships with their peers and adult leaders.

Overall, Boy Scouting offers boys a unique and rewarding experience that helps them to grow and develop into responsible, well-rounded individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
